*You have
created many unique pieces, but how did you start working
with bamboo in the first place?
"Honestly, it wasn't a great meeting
at all. I didn't know what I wanted to be after high school,
but I didn't want to be just a white-collar woker. At
that time my mon told me about this interesting school,
which was the Traditional Arts School of Kyoto. I majored
in Bamboo and Ceramics and I had to decide which one to
choose. I eventually chose bamboo. I don't remember why
I chose it at the age of nineteen, but maybe I just felt
better with it." |
|

*What made
you think to create these pieces?
"well...I decided to get employed after attending the
school and found a job at a company related to bamboo
work as I still wasn't sure about my life. There I came
to understand more about bamboo in my everyday work and
I became attracted by its grace.
Eventhough I was busy in my work, I wanted
to create something special to express my feelings. So
I started to work on bamboo projects little by little
during my lunch hour.

*Other
people must have been surprised at you making such a big
piece! How did the people around you respond?
"Yeah, that's true. They looked at me
strangely at first, but some people praised my work that
I created from the scratch, which was the first experience
of making things in my life. I had never had such a great
feeling in my life and I was very happy. I started to
think that I should create even bigger pieces to make
these people even more surprised, so I did."
*What do
you want to do from now on? Please let us know your objectives.
"I've been awarded
a great many prizes by creating large pieces than I had
in my mind. I want to keep creating even bigger pieces." |

Creating the pieces with bamboo
The
most inportant thing is that bamboo itself has perfect
design that cannot be ignored, so you may ruin it
if you work on it too much. With bamboo weaving,
you can split or tear the bamboo to make various
shapes, but you cannot make it into the shape you
have in your mind without thinking carefully about
how to go about it. You need to know the strong
and weak points of every single piece of bamboo,
choosing only the best ones for your work, and staying
completely in control. You need to manipulate and
play with it to create a piece. |
